Tilden, Samuel J(ones)
(9 feb. 1814, New Lebanon, N.Y., EE.UU.–4 ago. 1886, Greystone, N.Y.).

Político estadounidense. Fue dirigente del Partido Demócrata de Nueva York y, como presidente estadual del partido (1865–75), logro la caída del jefe de Tammany Hall, William Marcy Tweed. Desde el cargo de gobernador (1875–76) continuó las reformas y desenmascaró el Canal Ring, grupo de políticos y contratistas que habían estafado al estado. En 1876 fue el candidato presidencial demócrata. La agresiva campaña culminó con su triunfo en cuanto a votos populares, pero los republicanos impugnaron la votación en cuatro estados. Con miras a resolver el conflicto, el congreso nombró una Comisión electoral, la que decidió en favor del candidato republicano, Rutherford B. Hayes (See also colegio electoral). No dispuesto a causar mayor conflicto, aceptó la decisión y volvió a su próspero estudio de abogado. A su muerte, legó su cuantiosa fortuna para instalar una biblioteca pública gratuita en la ciudad de Nueva York.
